Surat accident: Fifteen migrant labourers sleeping on the footpath in Surat were crushed by a speeding truck on Tuesday. The tragic accident took place near Kosamba village, around 60 km from Surat. The truck collided with a sugarcane-laden tractor, following which the driver lost control and his vehicle climbed on the sideway where 15 people were sleeping on the Kim-Mandvi road. As per reports, 12 persons died on the spot and three of the eight injured died in a nearby hospital. The truck driver has been arrested. All the deceased hailed from Rajasthan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident tragic and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of victims. The loss of lives due to a truck accident in Surat is tragic. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Rs. 50,000 each would be given to those injured, the prime minister announced on Twitter. Lok Sabha speaker OM Birla, who hails from Rajasthan, offered condolences to the families of labourers who died in the tragic accident in Surat. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said that he was distressed by the tragic death of innocent workers sleeping on the pavement in Surat. He also said that an assistance of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of workers who died in the accident and injured will be given prompt treatment.
